Fall Family Session with the Ribeiros
What an honour it is to photograph my childhood (and current) BFF’s family…
Solange and I have known each other since we were 7 or 8 years old (however old you are in grade 3) and we are no stranger to each other’s families and even our extended families— we know who we’re talking about when someone says “my cousin so and so” and “my aunt and uncle this and that”. Every single weekend we would rotate between being at her house, my house, or our other girlfriend- Denise’s- house. We were always in the same classes throughout elementary school, then a few classes together in high school before she moved, and then we all went our separate ways for university but Denise, Solange, and I have the kind of friendship where even if we don’t talk or see each other for months on end, we always pick back up like not a single second of time has passed between us.
The importance of taking family photos most certainly is not lost on us— it’s literally what we do. But 99% of the time we’re approached by families with young kids wanting to document this milestone in their life, and these milestones are most certainly momentous and important times but we rarely are approached to photograph adult families. Back in the days of travelling (lol) when my family and I went to San Francisco I commissioned local photographer, Kati at Xilo Photography for a session with my mom, sister, and I. My mom always made a point to take family photos when we were younger, even when we were not so young and very snappy and impatient (teenagers am I right lol) and then we stopped all together. Going to SF was our first family trip in a while and with now photographing so many families myself, I thought it would be nice to have our photos taken again. I was not wrong. I can find absolutely no regrets in taking an evening from our vacation and spending the extra money to get this done. And for that I’m so incredibly honoured to do that for a family who I care about so deeply; for them to have these memories together and most importantly, these photos! Taking family photos every single year is by no means necessary, but sometimes you don’t need a big milestone as an excuse to get photos done. Sometimes it’s the everyday that’s magical, being photographed just as you are, right now.
