Jenna & Matt's Cozy At Home Maternity Session
here’s your friendly reminder that at home sessions can be just as beautiful as an outdoor session
And if you don’t want to shoot at your home specifically, there are plenty of studios around the city that have a cozy ‘home’ vibe without, you know, being at your specific home. We love at home sessions for so many different reasons, a couple favourites of those being: shooting in a familiar and sentimental space brings a whole new meaning and comfort to your photos that make them extra special. And also, it’s very low pressure since you’ll be with all of your things and all of your clothes, you can take a moment to have your tea, touch up your make in the bathroom, etc. and you don’t have to stress about forgetting something on the way out; easy breezy!
In this case Jenna & Matt’s downtown condo was the perfect backdrop for this cozy session, and a weather appropriate option (it was raining all weekend and though it did get sunny after we finished shooting it was cold, windy, and cloudy as we started but it was nbd because we were inside!). They snuggled up in bed together, on the couch (two of their fave. places to hang when spending time together at home), and shot some solo portraits of Jenna and her belly- which btw we will be requesting every mama-to-be to shoot from now on because holy w o w!
When the very pregnant Jenna reached out about setting up this photo session she included a few inspiration photos which we actually love seeing— it’s great to see what you expect out of your photos, and to be on the same page about whether or not it’s something we can do for you / if it aligns with our own shooting style— and the photos she sent, though were a touch different than our usual sessions, were so beautiful! Again, being at home in a really chill environment allowed us to shoot a bit, take a breather, and even check back to her emails to look at this inspiration photos and reference them and say ‘let’s recreate this position now!’ to make sure we were getting all of things they wanted but with our own style and twist on it.
Having recently shot their own engagement session J&M were absolute naturals in front of the camera; really comfortable with their own poses together, making small and subtle movements for the camera, and being aware of their body language to the camera, like actual A++. And that’s exactly why we love and really encourage couples to shoot an engagement session prior to their wedding! Having the ability to see themselves in professional photos before gave them a sense of awareness when doing it all over again. They even frequently said “I remember this from our other shoot” or “I liked how this looked in our engagement photos so let’s do it again”.
