An Editorial Inspired Elopement with Jenna & Matthew
We recently added a tagline of, “authentic moments with an editorial touch” and this wedding really ENCAPSULATES that
While our main focus will always be documentary style photography we have been incorporating more of an editorial style into our sessions— on both wedding day and during engagement / couples sessions— when we can. We so frequently get inquiries that say “we’re really awkward in front of the camera” or “we’re really camera shy” so folks like to lean into candid captures so they don’t have to think about being in a ‘photoshoot’ so to speak. In a recent client call I realized though, shooting in an editorial style may be better for some! Having more direction takes the pressure off of figuring out what to do on your own, and the pressure of being ‘on’ even when you’re trying to be ‘candid’. We never shy away from validating our couples when they say they feel weird… it is a weird experience, it definitely can feel intimidating! We can’t guarantee that halfway through our shoot you’ll feel like a supermodel and suddenly will have a natural inclination for posing, but what we can do is help you feel a little more comfortable, and a little more confident. And sometimes this happens through letting you do your own thing, but if even that feels intimidating, let us help you through a more editorial style lens with candid captures in between!
Jenna & Matthew made their way over from BC to elope in Toronto with their immediate families. It was a straightforward, no fluff, kind of wedding (our fave!) with their nearest and dearest, and while we didn’t have a lot of time together I so appreciated that consciously set aside a small portion of time for their portraits because w o w! While I’m not sure if Jenna’s red jacket was an intentional choice or just what she happened to pack for their flight over, it really felt like it was the star of the show and will now forever be an example of a beautiful jacket you can wear over your wedding dress that will look beautiful. It was a dull spring day when we shot (not unusual for Toronto) so the vibrancy of her jacket paired with her and Matthew’s genuine love really brought some joy into their photos!
Circling back into the first run on paragraph of this post (lol) J&M took direction really well when it came to posing but they also made it theirs; authentic moments with an editorial touch. It was really such a beautiful and perfect balance between the two, and we are so thrilled with how this turned out even with only 20 minutes to shoot!
